Middle School Opening Week Schedules

Dear Middle School Families,

I trust you are enjoying the summer and keeping cool in the heat. The start of the upcoming school year may seem far off, but our District staff are busy preparing for the exciting changes at the middle schools, such as the opening of Black Rock and the new grade configurations at Bala Cynwyd and Welsh Valley. I know rumors are circulating that Black Rock might not be ready in time for the start of the school year, but I am pleased and elated to confirm that BRMS will be open for the first day of school on Sept. 6, 2022.

Though all of our buildings will be ready to open, we are slightly revising the schedules for the first days of the year for middle school students to adjust to the many changes and transitions. More specifically, with so many middle schoolers assigned to new schools this year, we feel the revisions outlined below will enable new students and staff to become more comfortable in their buildings in smaller groups, before all students are in the buildings together.

Opening Schedule for Bala Cynwyd and Welsh Valley Middle Schools

  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022:
    • Grades 5 & 6: Full Day,
    • Grades 7 & 8: No School
  • Wednesday, September 7th:
    • Grades 5-8: Full Day for all students

Opening Schedule for Black Rock Middle School

  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022:
    • Grades 5 & 6: Full Day
    • Grades 7 & 8: No School
  • Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022
    • Grades 5 & 6: No School
    • Grades 7 & 8: Full Day
  • Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022:
    • Grades 5-8: Full Day for all students

Identified Special Education students at all three middle schools will attend full days beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022. Families will be notified by Student Services if this applies to their child.

On all of these dates, buses will operate on the regular 2022-2023 schedule that will be shared with families via the PowerSchool Parent Portal prior to the start of the school year.

Thank you in advance for your flexibility and understanding. We are confident this staggered start to the middle school year will support our efforts to create a sense of belonging and build a positive school climate for all of our fifth through eighth graders.
