Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Penn Wynne Elementary School! Located in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; our school sits on 9.25 acres in the western suburbs of historic Philadelphia. Our school community includes approximately 625 students and more than 80 professional and support staff.
Penn Wynne Elementary School (PWES) first opened its doors in 1932. In 1951, PWES was expanded with the building's first addition. On October 20, 2002, the completion of a second and more expansive "Additions and Alterations" project celebrated the modernization and rededication of Penn Wynne Elementary School.
Innovations in literacy, social studies, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) instruction afford our students opportunities in research-based best practices for learning. Our teachers utilize and infuse technology in their daily instruction to support curriculum which is reinforced by 1:1 student access to iPads in K and Grade 1 and Chromebooks in Grades 2-4. Music, art, library, physical education and guidance programs offer children a myriad of varied opportunities for personal growth.
Beyond the opportunities for personal growth through the programs mentioned above; additional services and programs are provided to address individual needs. These include a continuum of services and programs which include special education, gifted, reading, math and English Language Development supports. Additional support for the students and families of PWES include two school counselors, a registered nurse, a social worker and an Assistant Principal.
In addition to promoting the academic growth and development of our students, PWES affords students opportunities to grow and develop as contributing members of the school community. PWES has received recognition from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for our implementation of a schoolwide PBIS (Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports) system. All members of the school community work to positively reinforce expected behavior to create a safe and welcoming environment for all. Additionally, throughout the year, PWES engages in a variety of social and community service activities and programs. One of our most cherished programs is our longstanding special connection to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
In addition, PWES has an active Home & School Association that supports many educational and social events, including an annual Book Fair, author visits, grade-level social events, PBIS incentives and the annual PWES Fun Fair.
We anticipate this will be another great year of excellence and learning, and we look forward to your joining our school community.
Sincerely,
Shawn Bernatowicz
