Penn Valley Elementary School, in partnership with Young Audiences of New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania, welcomed artists from the OKRA Dance Company for an immersive cultural exploration, American Dance: From Africa to Broadway!

The talented duo guided students through a captivating journey across centuries of American history, demonstrating how migration, culture and communication have influenced the evolution of theatrical dance. With rhythmic precision and expressive storytelling, they showcased how diverse traditions—from European classical court and folk dances to African plantation narratives—blended over time to create uniquely American styles.

Students watched in awe as the performers traced the roots of vaudeville, captured the energy of early Broadway and brought to life the vibrant world of the Harlem Renaissance. Through dynamic movement and engaging narration, the artists illustrated how dance has served as both an artistic expression and a historical record, preserving the voices and experiences of those who came before.

This spirited presentation left students with a deeper appreciation of dance as a cultural bridge, connecting generations and communities through movement, rhythm and shared history.
