The Friday before Memorial Day Weekend was a day for the Lower Merion Aces to EmbrACE something new at school. After a month that included PSSA and AP tests, and with just a couple of weeks before final assessments and projects, the students spent the morning engaged in a variety of activities meant to lessen stress, build belonging and enjoy common interests with friends old and new.
The day started with a full-school gathering in the Kobe Bryant Gymnasium, where Lower Merion School District's Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Shawanna James Coles, led the students in an activity during which they identified interests that they shared. The students found that although they might come from different backgrounds or be in different grades, they had much in common -- whether it was a love of singing, a favorite food, being a youngest sibling or another characteristic.
After the assembly, students spent the remainder of the half day engaging in a variety of enjoyable activities, many of which were technology-free. These including drawing colorful chalk sidewalk art, competing in a (cellphone- and Google-free) trivia contest, planting flowers around campus, playing old-school board games, badminton, whiffle ball and frisbee, as well as various workouts, jumprope, crocheting and more.
One of the highlights of the day was a student-staff basketball game, held in the Downs Gym.
