LMHS Raises $17K for Charity as Applestein & Ridgeway are Named the 2025 ‘Amazing Aces’

Lower Merion High School’s 15th Annual Amazing Ace Competition, held on Friday, January 24, delivered an unforgettable evening of entertainment, school spirit and philanthropy. This year’s show, themed "Villains," featured eight exceptional upperclassmen competing not just for the coveted title of Amazing Ace, but also to support meaningful causes.

In a dramatic and unprecedented finish, Rhys Applestein and Lucia Ridgeway both claimed victory in a tie, earning them the title of Amazing Aces! The true winners of the night, however, were the students and charities that benefited from the generosity of those who supported the event. The competition raised more than $7,000 for the senior class and an impressive $10,000 for contestants’ chosen charities.

The event’s imaginative storyline set the stage for an exciting showdown: an evil wizard had placed Ace the Bulldog under a spell, and each contestant—embodying a different Disney villain—was challenged to break the curse.

To prove their worth, the competitors took part in a catwalk, hip-hop dance, Q&A session, individual talent performances and partner dance—all while showcasing their charisma and stage presence.

This year’s contestants included seniors Rhys Applestein, Sam Fenning, Keira Gibbons, Sammie Grolnick, Katie Haves, Dotun Okunade and Ben Palasol, along with junior Lucia Ridgeway. Guiding the audience and contestants through the night with humor and energy were senior Ella Milby and junior Maya Zada, who served as emcees.

Adding to the spectacle, LM’s a cappella group, Ace Harmony, and the LM Dance Team delivered standout performances that energized the crowd.

Beyond the competition, Amazing Ace continues to be a force for good. Along with raising funds for the senior class and contestants’ charities, the event also supported the Sean Hughes Memorial Fund, honoring Lower Merion’s beloved late principal. A longtime emcee of the event, Mr. Hughes was an integral part of this tradition, and his legacy continues to inspire the LMHS community.

With its blend of talent, excitement, and generosity, Amazing Ace once again proved why it remains one of Lower Merion’s most anticipated events. Congratulations to Rhys Applestein and Lucia Ridgeway on their well-earned titles, and a huge thank you to everyone who participated, attended, and donated to make this event such a success!
