On February 28, 2024, Harriton High School students took part in a school-wide Wellness Day.
Taylor Swift trivia replaced trigonometry. Slime-making replaced science. And creativity replaced calculus, as students painted to a instructional video from Bob Ross and made snow globes with miniature clay figurines inside.
A band played in the atrium, while board games were being played in the library. Some students crocheted, while others played basketball and lifted weights.
As they engaged in these activities and many more, students laughed and talked and generally decompressed. Both students and staff designed the Wellness Day activities to give students a much-needed break from the day-to-day stress of academic pressures that many feel.
The event gave students a chance to pursue interests and activities that they often don't have time for, and also the opportunity to develop new skills and interests -- especially skills that didn't require them to be on phones and other devices.
