On, Thursday, May 24, the Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund (LMTSF) held its annual New Recipient Reception at the Merion Tribute House where this year’s deserving collection of students – both new beneficiaries and renewals from prior years – officially received their grants. In addition to the new scholarship recipients and their families, many LMSD administrators were present along with the LMTSF board, honored guests and donors.
The scholarship fund was established in 1964 by the Interschool Council (ISC) with the support of community members, Home & School Associations (HSA) and School Board. The following year, 11 grants totaling $8,550 were awarded. Since that time, over 4,600 grants worth more than $4.5 million have been awarded to graduates of Lower Merion School District to pursue college, junior college, vocational and technical education of all kinds.
The bulk of the money awarded by the LMTSF for grants comes from donations made by individuals, Special Awards, HSAs and school fundraisers. As the cost of higher education increases, it becomes harder to maintain the same level of funding for these awards. The Fund's Board of Governors are continually seeking new sources of revenue.
