Acting Superintendent Megan Shafer Shares a Message about School Safety

Dear LMSD Families,

Yesterday’s tragic school shooting in Winder, Georgia, has profoundly affected countless lives and added yet another community to the ever-growing list of those forever changed by such heart-wrenching events. As educators, families and students, we all feel the impact and the ongoing threat of these tragedies. It is crucial that we remain vigilant and compassionate, and never become desensitized to these devastating events.

The safety and security of our students remain a top priority at LMSD. As a parent of school-aged children, I understand that you may have questions about our safety measures and the steps we take to protect our school community. Our approach is multi-layered and involves not only our school staff, but also the active participation of students and families. We continuously evaluate and enhance our preparedness and response strategies, recognizing that no community can ever be fully prepared for such horrific situations.

I encourage you to review the resources available on our Keep Kids Safe page. It is important that we all work together to maintain a safe environment for our children. Please remind your students to report any unusual or potentially threatening behavior to a trusted adult at school, or, when not at school, to law enforcement or the Safe2Say Something tipline. Similarly, if you, as parents, guardians or community members, become aware of concerning information that may pose a threat to our schools, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school principal, law enforcement and/or my office.

Thank you for your continued support and collaboration in keeping our school community safe. Together, we can work towards a more secure and supportive environment for all our students.
