Transition Information
The Lower Merion School District has an extensive array of transition services that prepare all students for appropriate post-secondary goals in education, employment, and independent living. These goals are set by the IEP team. Exploration of post-secondary options begins by age 14 and continues through graduation. Students' interests and aptitudes are assessed, and they have opportunities to participate in identified activities that align with the post-secondary goals.
In addition to a Coordinator of Special Education for Transition and Grades 7-12+, the District has three full-time and one part-time job coaches, who support students with disabilities to access community-based work experiences and training when determined appropriate by an IEP team. In partnership with local work-related sites, simulated work opportunities are created to practice and foster the soft-skills needed to gain and maintain employment.
The District also has a Practical Assessment Explorations System (PAES) lab. Assessments conducted within the lab gather information about students' competitive work interest and potential levels while simultaneously exploring various jobs, using real tools, and developing field-specific work behaviors in computer technology, construction/industrial, processing/production, consumer/service, and business and marketing. Questions about transition should be directed to your child's special education case manager.
