Special Education Courses

Students may be recommended for various special education courses through the IEP process. An IEP team determines how much time is needed to make meaningful progress towards IEP goals relative to a student's unique circumstances. How that time is provided depends, in part, on the school's schedule. At the elementary level, time for direct instruction in IEP goal areas from a special education teacher in a small group occurs during scheduled times within a student's school day. At the secondary level, time for direct instruction in IEP goal areas from a special education teacher in a small group occurs during scheduled classes. An IEP team determines the class frequency that is most appropriate. At the high school level, courses taught by a special education teacher are listed in the high school program planning guide.

Students may participate in an Instructional Support Lab (ISL) for a prescribed number of class periods per cycle depending upon the program described within their IEPs. Individualized skill remediation is provided as per each student's IEP targeting a student's individual needs. Students receive direct instruction and additional support to ensure meaningful progress to maximize their achievement. Students will earn quarterly grades based on the appropriate work completed on their individualized goals. Participation is determined by a student's IEP team based on individual needs. Questions about special education instruction and courses should be directed to your child's special education case manager.
