Family Education Rights Protection Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents/guardians and students over 18 years of age ("eligible students") certain rights to the student's education records. Under FERPA, a school must provide parents/guardians with an opportunity to inspect and review their child's education records within a reasonable period of time, but not more than 45 calendar days following receipt of a request. Under FERPA, parents/guardians have the right to seek amendment or correction of their child's education records that the parents/guardians believe to be inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the child's rights of privacy. Under FERPA, a school generally may not disclose personally identifiable information from a student's education records to a third party unless the student's parents/guardians have provided prior written consent. Questions regarding FERPA should be directed to the Director of Student Services and Special Education (Kimberly Fraser, fraserk@lmsd.org, 610.645.1918).
