Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. The use of AT is based on a student's specific needs, which are discussed and determined as part of the IEP team process. The district uses the SETT process (Student Environment Tools and Tasks) to determine the level of Assistive Technology needed to meet an individual student's needs. The process is facilitated by the IEP team with support from the District's Assistive Technology Coordinator when necessary. Information is gathered in a collaborative process and the IEP team works to decide what intervention will be used, what tools will be needed to move in that direction and what the measures, which will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the tools selected as well as the interventions used to support the student's progress, will be. If you have questions related to Assistive Technology, contact your child's special education case manager.
