The Office of Equity and Compliance (OEC)

Promoting Equity and Inclusion

The OEC plays a central role in supporting equitable practices and policies within the Lower Merion School District. This includes promoting a diverse and inclusive environment, ensuring fair treatment and opportunities for all, and upholding legal and ethical standards related to equity and non-discrimination. The team works to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or other protected characteristics, have equal opportunities and are treated fairly and respectfully. Our work fosters a culture of equality and respect within the organization that is foundational to creating a sense of belonging for all.

Anti-Discrimination Enforcement

One of the primary functions of the OEC is to enforce anti-discrimination laws, policies and regulations. This includes investigating and addressing complaints related to discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other violations of equity and inclusion policies.Title IX Sexual Harassment is a specific form of harassment prohibited by federal law and LMSD policy. The OEC ensures District practice follows the required investigative procedures and responds in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education rules and regulations.

Policy Development and Implementation

The OEC is responsible for developing, updating, and implementing policies and procedures related to equity and compliance. These policies include, but are not limited to, guidance documents/manuals, codes of conduct, diversity and inclusion initiatives/plans.

Education and Training

OEC typically provides educational programs and training sessions for employees, students and others. These programs aim to raise awareness about equity and inclusion issues, promote cultural competence, and prevent discrimination and harassment.

Community Outreach

The office collaborates with the School and Community Relations Department in outreach efforts to foster relationships with community organizations, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders. This can help build partnerships and gather input on equity-related issues.
