Cynwyd Elementary School students and their families joined artist Rebecca Rutstein for a ribbon-cutting to unveil "Synthesis," a new mural in the school library makerspace.
About 500 Cynwyd students and staff helped create the mural, which was inspired by Rutstein's ocean exploration and collaboration with scientists researching chemical and microbial processes in the deep sea. During the project, she shared with students pictures and information about her deep sea dives and the intersection of art and science.
Rutstein is a Cynwyd alumna whose children attend the school as well. You can learn more about her work on her website.
The makerspace is an area in the school where students can work on all sorts of creative projects, including using a 3D printer, in alignment with LMSD's strategic plan pathways of transformative curriculum and student-driven schools.
An ISC mini-grant helped fund the mural project. Librarian Natalie Thibault and Math Specialist Karen Salladino were instrumental in making the mural a reality.
