A Better Chance in Lower Merion

A Better Chance: Opening the door to greater educational opportunities since 1963A Better Chance is a college preparatory program that offers a challenging educational opportunity to academically talented, economically disadvantaged minority students who are determined to succeed. Founded in 1973, A Better Chance in Lower Merion, is part of the Community Schools Program (CSP) of the national A Better Chance organization. CSP scholars attend highly-ranked public high schools in suburban settings. ABC-LM scholars attend Lower Merion High School.

ABC-LM is an all-male boarding program, with a house in Ardmore that can accommodate up to nine students. A resident director manages the house and three live-in tutors supervise mandatory study halls five nights per week and arrange for weekend activities and social events. Each ABC-LM student has a support network that includes an academic advisor, a host family and a house relations committee. Students have full access to all resources and opportunities available in Lower Merion School District. ABC-LM also provides private SAT tutoring for all juniors and seniors.

All ABC-LM graduates have gone on to four-year colleges/universities and more than 95% have graduated in four years. Recent graduates have attended Haverford, Bowdoin, Syracuse, Drexel and Maryland.

ABC-LM is run by a local Board of Directors and supported financially by contributions from the community. For more information, including volunteer opportunities, visit www.abclowermerion.com.
