Lower Merion School District serves the 62,000 residents of Lower Merion Township and Narberth Borough. Located just west of Philadelphia in a suburban area known as the "Main Line," the Lower Merion community is noted for its rich history, natural beauty, outstanding schools and colleges, stately architecture, numerous parks and myriad cultural resources.
Lower Merion is Montgomery County's most affluent and populated municipality with the highest incomes, largest labor force, highest ratio of white collar and professional workers, most households, most single-family detached dwellings, and most married residents. Lower Merion is the largest of the 62 municipalities in the county.
First settled in 1682 by Welsh Quakers, the Township covers an area of 23.64 square miles and is bounded by the City of Philadelphia, the Boroughs of Conshohocken and West Conshohocken, and the Townships of Upper Merion and Whitemarsh in Montgomery County and by the Townships of Haverford and Radnor in Delaware County.
Incorporated communities within Lower Merion include Merion, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Bala and Cynwyd. Unincorporated communities within the Township are Belmont Hills, General Wayne, Gladwyne, Penn Valley, Penn Wynne and Villanova. The Borough of Narberth, incorporated in 1895, is a separate political entity of one-half square mile and is completely surrounded by the Township. Narberth students attend Lower Merion public schools.
Lower Merion Township is governed by a fourteen member Board of Commissioners. Members are elected by ward to serve overlapping terms of four years. The Board also appoints the Township Manager, who oversees the day-to-day operation of the Township.
Lower Merion is community characterized by a deep sense of civic pride and involvement. Nearly 20 business and civic associations provide an opportunity for residents to participate in their community. Excellent educational opportunities, two respected hospitals, convenient shopping, an extensive transportation system and dining establishments and a plenitude of open space all within its borders, make Lower Merion one of the most desirable communities in which to live and work in Pennsylvania.
