Black Rock Students Share Tasty Plan for National School Breakfast Week

March 4-8, 2024, is National School Breakfast Week.

This year, full school breakfasts are free for all Lower Merion School District students. But not all students take advantage of this nutritious and delicious opportunity.

Students in the seventh-grade leadership class at Black Rock Middle School took on the challenge of increasing participation in the school breakfast program. They noted that some students don't have time to go to the dining hall between the time they arrive at school and when they need to be in their first class.

The students suggested that Nutritional Services set up "Grab-and-Go" breakfast carts near the main entrance and the gym. These locations are convenient for students running late, and for those who like to play basketball in the morning and do not have the chance to go downstairs to the dining hall.

The response to the cart concept was great! Each day since the carts debuted, more BRMS Royals have taken advantage of the breakfast program than any days earlier in the year. the Nutritional Services Department is using the BRMS example to work out logistics and plans to expand breakfast carts to more schools going forward.

While the students in the leadership class certainly took the lead on this initiative, they are thankful for the support of their teacher, Mr. Scott Kleiman, their principal, Ms. Sarah Stout, and the Nutritional Services Department team for putting their great idea into practice.
