Spirit of Community

LMSD Smart Start

Highlights: In spring 2023, the Lower Merion Board of School Directors approved LMSD Smart Start, a shift in school start times effective September 2024. This initiative prioritizes student well-being by aligning high school schedules with adolescent sleep patterns, a change supported by research on circadian rhythms and health benefits.

New Start Times (Effective September 2024):

  • Middle School: 8:00 a.m. – 2:35 p.m.
  • High School: 8:30 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.
  • Elementary School: 9:10 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.

Pathway Connection: LMSD Smart Start embodies A Spirit of Community, demonstrating the District's dedication to listening to students, families, and educators in shaping policies that benefit the entire school community. By fostering an environment where students thrive both academically and personally, this initiative underscores LMSD's commitment to continuous improvement and shared success. Additionally, it aligns with the District's commitment to Redefining Success by prioritizing students' well-being through healthier sleep patterns - an essential factor in academic achievement, mental health, and overall development.

Community Connections

Highlights: Strong community partnerships enhance student learning by connecting them with experts, professionals, and local organizations. Programs like Art Goes to School in our elementary schools bring trained parent volunteers into classrooms to teach art appreciation, fostering collaboration between families and schools while supporting a regional arts initiative. The Welsh Valley Middle School Speaker Series and BCMS and BRMS Author Visits expose students to professionals, storytellers, and authors who broaden their perspectives and inspire future aspirations. Similarly, the High School Career Symposiums provides students with direct access to industry professionals, demonstrating diverse career pathways and fostering valuable mentorship opportunities. These initiatives enrich students' educational experiences by leveraging community expertise and resources.

Pathway Connection: By strategically coordinating these outreach efforts, we maximize community resources to strengthen our schools, ensuring students benefit from meaningful, real-world connections that enhance their academic and personal growth.

Affinity Groups

Highlights: Student affinity groups create spaces for belonging, empowerment, and inclusivity within our schools. The NSBE STEM after-school club fosters cultural affirmation and social justice while encouraging students to explore STEM through a community-focused lens. Our Best Buddies programs build meaningful friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, promoting inclusion and leadership in a supportive environment. REACH at Bala Cynwyd Middle School serves as a foundation for high school affinity groups by empowering students of color through mentorship, discussions on race and identity, and community engagement with parents and local leaders. These groups provide students with a platform to celebrate their identities, form meaningful connections, and engage in advocacy within their school communities. Lower Merion High School students engage in computer science activities through Program.it and Code LM, fostering community, collaboration, and networking with professionals, alumni, and peers from other schools.

Community Celebrations & Showcases

Highlights: Community celebrations and showcases serve as powerful avenues for fostering connection, appreciation, and belonging within our schools. Events at our elementary schools like Cultural Heritage Night, Taste of PW, and the Potluck Dinner bring families together to share their traditions, stories, and cuisines, reinforcing the richness of our diverse community. Similarly, the Parent Café and the MultiLingual Families Picnic create welcoming spaces where families build relationships and provide support for one another. Additionally, Back-to-School Picnics and Grade-Level Evening Socials allow students, families, and teachers to form meaningful bonds early in the school year, setting the tone for an inclusive and engaged school community. Meanwhile, Ram Day at Harriton High School offers a platform for student organizations to connect with peers and promote student-driven engagement, while Thrilling Thursdays at Welsh Valley empower students with choice-based enrichment opportunities, deepening their sense of agency and connection with educators and classmates.

Furthermore, elementary programs such as Guaranteed Experiences integrate community partnerships into the curriculum, enriching student learning through real-world applications, while initiatives like Student Shoutouts and Ram Huddle recognize and uplift members of the school community. Events like Camp America cultivate teamwork and personal growth, demonstrating that when students feel connected to their peers, educators, and community, they develop a stronger sense of belonging and a deeper commitment to their shared learning environment. Additionally, fourth-graders from all six LMSD elementary schools attend the World Language Festival hosted by over 150 student volunteers from both high schools to explore French, Spanish, and Latin and choose a language for fifth grade.

Pathway Connection: These celebrations and experiences exemplify the Spirit of Community pathway by fostering environments where students, families, and staff actively engage with one another, strengthening relationships, and celebrating the unique contributions of each individual.

Universal Full-Day Kindergarten

Highlights: Lower Merion School District introduced Universal Full-Day Kindergarten in the 2024-2025 school year, reimagining early learning through a dynamic, student-centered approach. Developed through collective inquiry, this program expands LMSD's rigorous and engaging curriculum, enhances opportunities for inquiry, exploration, and differentiation, supports social-emotional and play-based learning, and ensures a positive, engaging early school experience for every child. By providing the time and space for young learners to master foundational skills, Full-Day Kindergarten fosters curiosity, collaboration, and creativity, setting the stage for future success.

Pathway Connection: The launch of Universal Full-Day Kindergarten in Fall 2024 reflects LMSD's deep commitment to A Spirit of Community. By engaging families, educators, and stakeholders in shaping this initiative, the District has created an inclusive learning experience that benefits all students.

This initiative strengthens the partnership between home and school, ensuring that every child begins their K-12 journey with a strong foundation, a love of learning, and a deep sense of belonging within the LMSD community.
