Women's History Month

Lower Merion School District is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month each March, a time dedicated to honoring the countless contributions women have made to our nation and the world. What began as a local celebration in 1978 grew into a nationally recognized observance in 1987, expanding from a week to a full month of recognition. Women’s History Month invites us to reflect on the achievements, leadership and resilience of women across generations — in science, education, public service, environmental advocacy, civil rights and beyond — while inspiring future leaders in our classrooms and community.
The 2026 theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” highlights women who are rebuilding and strengthening systems to ensure long-term environmental, economic and social sustainability. This theme emphasizes the power of leadership rooted in equity, innovation and stewardship — recognizing that meaningful progress requires inclusive voices and bold action.
The women featured in the banner image above embody this spirit. From environmental pioneers like Dr. Rachel Carson and Wangari Maathai to civic leaders like Shirley Chisholm and Stacey Abrams, to global advocates for education and human rights such as Malala Yousafzai and Rigoberta Menchú Tum, each has shaped a more sustainable and just future in her own way. Together, their stories remind us that lasting change begins with courage, vision, and a commitment to lifting others forward.
