SMART (rising 9th)
SMART Reading is a Literacy Learning Program for students entering 9th grade at Lower Merion High School or Harriton High School. The program will help students navigate their first required summer reading, develop strategies for successful studying of ninth grade social studies and science texts, and acquire skills for close reading of all text in all subjects.
This program previews what students will experience during the opening weeks of their freshman year in high school in the Lower Merion School District. It introduces students to the required summer reading for English. It also dedicates time to strategies for reading and studying from the 9th grade Biology and Global Studies textbooks. Every student will leave with a binder they can use to organize their work once the school year begins.
This program is for any student who would like a “jump start” to high school experiences. While the program most often serves students who have selected to take college-preparatory level classes, it may also be a worthwhile program for students who are “stretching” to take an Honors course.
Students are recommended by a teacher to participate. Parents/Guardians who would like to recommend their child, should have a conversation with their child’s English teacher to see if the program might be worthwhile.
Recommended students will be invited to register via an online link that will be emailed to parents.
If you have any questions regarding SMART, contact the Supervisor of Secondary English, Social Studies, Literacy, and Libraries, Dr. Leslie Pratt (firstname.lastname@example.org).
SMART will run Monday, July 15 - Friday, July 19, 2019 from 8:30 AM- 11:30 AM at Harriton High School.
