Lower Merion School District

Green LMSD

Lower Merion School District is deeply committed to supporting sustainability in our school community. From LEED-certified buildings to K-12 environmental education programs, an award-winning green cleaning program to the nation's largest fleet of school buses fueled by compressed natural gas, we strive to be a model for responsible environmental stewardship. For these efforts, LMSD was among only 14 nationwide honorees for the first-ever U.S. Department of Education (USDE) Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Award. Honored districts were selected for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics, STEM and green career pathways.

The District also maintains an Energy and Resource Conservation Program. The program, supported by the District's operations department and energy conservation consultant, Practical Energy Solutions, helps reduce electricity and carbon emissions.

Here are some of the District's key "green" initiatives:

LMHS Trash Awareness Video

This video produced by the Lower Merion Enviromental Club explores the trash output of the school and community. Their purpose was to bring awareness to the amount of trash students produce and to inspire other schools to take after their initiatives.
