Throughout her years at Lower Merion High School, senior Vanessa Roser would compete in the Annual Latin Week Contests sponsored by the Philadelphia Classical Society, in which she won either first place, Best of Show and Summa Cum Laude distinctions for every single entry she submitted. Her illustrations were so exquisite, people could not help but take notice, including former LMHS Latin teacher, Mary Brown, who became convinced there was a market for her work.
Drawing on her experience in the Latin Week Contests, Roser, with support from Brown and a grant from LMSD to cover initial printing costs, put together a coloring book illustrating the pantheon of Greek Gods & Goddesses. Her work caught the attention of Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, who recently signed the burgeoning artist to a contract to reproduce and sell her work back in 2017.
In the first photo in the slideshow below, editor Donald Sprague of Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers is posing for a picture with the "Greek Gods and Goddesses Coloring Book" illustrated by Roser - currently an undergraduate student at Harvard University - at the Exhibitors and Vendors section of the Annual Meetings of the Archaeological Institute of America and the Society of Classical Studies held in Washington D.C. in early January. The production and printing of Roser's coloring book were supported by the Philadelphia Classical Society and the Lower Merion School District.
