On Friday morning, March 23, CBS3 reporter Stephanie Stahl visited Ms. Megan Henry's first grade class at Cynwyd Elementary School. The class has been leading the school's effort to raise money for "Ryan's Race for Change" in honor of classmate Ryan Stearn, who has been diagnosed with a very rare genetic mutation.
Each grade has been collecting loose change, and depositing it into water cooler jars in a friendly competition. So far, the Kindergarten/First Grade jar is the heaviest, but the money will be counted at the bank to determine the winner. All the money collected will be donated to a researcher at Einstein Hospital in New York, who hopes to produce stem cells from Ryan and his older brother and see if experiments in fixing the mutation, which have been conducted on mice, can be replicated to help Ryan.
Ryan's parents say they're extremely grateful to the Cynwyd community for this effort, especially considering they just moved to Bala Cynwyd from New York at the start of this school year.
The story is expected to air on CBS3 during the 6:00 p.m. news on Monday March 26, but you can watch a video about Ryan and Cynwyd's fundraising effort here.
