As a follow up to my February 15th correspondence, I want to express how proud I am of our students in their efforts to seek change after another senseless act of violence and their requests for a peaceful walk-out. Many of you have inquired about plans for a student organized walk-out. At both the high school and middle school level, our principals are working with students to coordinate their walk-out efforts, with the goal of ensuring that it is done in a manner that keeps students safe.
I also want to acknowledge the concerns we have received from parents and guardians; we appreciate your continued outreach to us. To this end, I wanted to bring to your attention additional steps we are taking as well as opportunities for your input:
- On-Going Safety & Security Efforts/Community Comments: In my February 15th letter, I shared examples of the District's varied safety and security measures that are in place and the on-going nature of that work, which is connected to the threat of an active shooter as well as the broader array of student safety and security concerns. The District has also continued reviewing steps at each of its buildings to ensure safety procedures are being followed including, but not limited to, entrance procedures and reminding students to not open exterior doors, even for other students. Also, our school safety team has been communicating with local law enforcement and the Montgomery County School Safety Coordinator as we continue to increase the police presence in our schools as well as welcomed their participation in drills that have been planned. We continue to receive and respond to inquiries from the community and are keeping a record of those comments, questions and concerns in our efforts to review and improve practices.
- Ask the Superintendent: I am also hosting an "Ask the Superintendent" on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the Academy Building in Bala Cynwyd at 3:00 PM. I have asked Dennis Witt, Supervisor of School Security to join me for this meeting, we welcome your input at this forum.
- LMSD School Safety Task Force: At last Tuesday's School Board meeting, I announced plans to re-convene the LMSD School Safety Task Force which consisted of staff, parents, students, law enforcement and community members. If you are interested in serving on the Task Force, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with a brief letter of interest and resume. You may also direct questions and feedback about school security to this account.
Thank you for your continued cooperation, understanding and support, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact your school principal or counselor anytime.
