Lower Merion School District Superintendent Robert Copeland is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jeffrey Hunter as principal for LMSD@Home, LMSD's fully virtual instructional option for the 2020-2021 school year. LMSD@Home will operate as a school without walls within the District, following the prescribed LMSD curriculum, with instruction provided by LMSD teachers and staff. Students in K-8 will work with teachers specifically assigned to LMSD@Home, while high school students will work with their assigned teachers from Harriton or Lower Merion.
To run LMSD@Home, Mr. Hunter will step away from his position as assistant principal at Bala Cynwyd Middle School, where he has served in that capacity since 2013. Before joining BCMS, Mr. Hunter was a principal of grades ranging from K-12 at Math Science and Technology Community Charter School in Philadelphia. He began his educational career as a social studies teacher.
"Historians say that pandemics change everything and they are probably right," Mr. Hunter reflects. "They have definitely changed the way we teach and how our students and l will experience school this year. I am excited to be a part of guiding students, parents, guardians and faculty through these times at LMSD@Home."
Supt. Copeland said, "Mr. Hunter is a both a leader and a team player within our District. He was instrumental in making LMSD@Home a reality. Conceptualizing and opening a new school is a process that usually takes years of planning. But Mr. Hunter and other dedicated members of our administrative team collaborated to develop every detail of this project in a matter of weeks. I am confident that he and his staff will provide our LMSD@Home students and their families with the quality educational program they expect from our District, in which they can fully participate from the safety of their own homes during this unprecedented time."
Teacher assignments for K-5 students in LMSD@Home are now available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Middle school assignments will be posted on Monday, August 31, 2020. Prior to the first day of school on Sept. 8, 2020, teachers will be reaching out directly to their students to begin the important work of building a virtual classroom community. In addition, families will receive information about LMSD's Virtual Learning Toolkit, which will include links to a variety of resources to help families support their students, including information on where and how to access assignments and schedules, technical support, printables and more.
Distribution of Devices and Learning Resources for LMSD@Home
LMSD@Home students and their families should plan to attend the distributions at their home schools to pick up their devices, textbooks and other educational resources. These distributions have already begun for high school students. Middle school distributions will begin August 31 and Elementary School distributions will begin Sept. 1. Please check the emails from your home school principal for the exact dates and times by grade.
Orientation Sessions for LMSD@Home
Mr. Hunter will host two Zoom Orientation sessions for K-8 LMSD@Home students and their families. LMSD@Home families should plan to attend either the 12:30 p.m. session or the 7:00 p.m. session on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020. LMSD@Home high school students should follow the orientation schedules shared by their high school principals. Zoom information for these sessions was shared with families in an email.
