Montco Commission Chair Visits Penn Wynne for Black History Month

Fourth-grade students at Penn Wynne Elementary School enjoyed a very special book reading in honor of Black History Month, thanks to Librarian Mr. Tabb who invited Jamila Winder, chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, to share a favorite book with them. 

Commissioner Winder read "Hidden Figures," a book she said she also reads to her own two children. Winder said the story of the Black women "computers" who worked at NASA provides a great example of how confidence, knowledge and perseverance can help anyone to reach their goals. 

She explained to the fourth graders that the confidence her grandmother and mother inspired in her from an early age, along with her dedication to education, helped her become the first Black woman to chair the county commission. 

After paying rapt attention to the book reading, the students were able to question the commissioner on a wide variety of topics, including how the county works to clear snow, whether she uses Artificial Intelligence (AI), what she finds important about public education, her favorite foods (tacos) and favorite place she's traveled (South Africa). 

At the conclusion of the assembly, the commissioner donated a book to the Penn Wynne library and gave teachers sunglasses to distribute to all of their fourth-grade students. 

CBS Philly News was on hand to capture the event. Reporter Madeleine Wright interviewed two students, who are expected to appear on the four o'clock news.
