Lower Merion High School recently welcomed Dr. Tracey Evans, a lung cancer oncologist at Lankenau Hospital and LMHS parent, to speak with students about the rapid rise in vaping in young adults and teens. Dr. Evans and her colleagues created the presentation to educate teenagers on the dangers and risks concomitant with this harmful activity as well as to inform students about the history of smoking; the similarities between vaping and smoking; addictive substances; how the media promotes these products; and how the damage to the physical body can be irreversible and silent. Based on scientific data, vaping is proving to be as bad, if not worse, than cigarettes, with the damaging effects potentially manifesting years after initial exposure.
