District families donate thousands of books for MLK Day of Service

Families from Bala Cynwyd and Welsh Valley middle schools, Penn Wynne and Penn Valley elementary schools, and Harriton and Lower Merion High Schools donated thousands of children's books to Philadelphia's Martin Luther King Day of Service Signature Event. The event, organized by Global Citizen, will take place on Jan. 17, 2022, at Girard College.

The book collections -- organized by HSA volunteers and students -- took place in early January. On Friday, January 14, 2022, Operations Department staff members Shawn Pester and Mike McCaw and School and Community Relations staff members Dan Capkin and Amy Buckman drove two cars and a truck filled with the donated books to Girard College.

The Signature Project will offer health services, including COVID tests and vaccines, to community members, along with information about health services and other community resources. The books donated by LMSD families will be given to children who parents and guardians attend the event. Any leftover books will be provided to Philadelphia children during a series of literacy events sponsored by Global Citizen during Black History Month.

Wanda Mial, Vice President of Community Initiatives for Global Citizen, was moved almost to tears when she saw how many books were being unloaded at Girard College. She expressed her gratitude to the Lower Merion community, "Thanks so much for everything today! Our kids and families will be so happy!"

LMSD thanks all the families who donated so generously to this worthy project!
