New York Times bestselling author Joelle Charbonneau recently visited Bala Cynwyd Middle School as she spoke with students about her popular young adult series The Testing Trilogy, the journey to becoming a writer, the creative process and much more.
As a former professional stage performer, Charbonneau discussed how what you think you are going to do with your life is not always what ends up happening and that, sometimes, those classes in school you thought were useless often become some of the most useful elements in shaping your future. Among the other topics covered throughout the program were writer's block and ways to push through it; why conflict is integral to writing and how it makes stories better; how authors construct the worlds that their characters inhabit; and how to do deal with rejection and the importance of persistence. Following the presentation, students enjoyed a question and answer session before having the opportunity to participate in a writer's workshop led by Charbonneau.
