Students in Penn Valley Elementary School's Environmental Club recently worked with members of Lower Merion School District's Buildings & Grounds Crew as they added another pair of redbud trees to their campus in celebration of Arbor Day. These are the sixth and seventh trees Penn Valley has installed in their redbud grove over the past several years.
Throughout the activity, students and staff identified where the trees were to be planted, dug two holes, and carefully placed the redbuds in their new homes before refilling the holes and covering the bases of each tree with mulch. Buildings & Crew member Felix Kelly guided students through the process while also discussing some important best-practices for redbud tree planting and maintenance.
The tree installation was made possible through a generous donation from the Penn Valley Home & School Association (HSA) and with leadership and support from Principal Scott Mitchell, Gifted Support Teacher Joe Mudd and Grounds Foreman Bob Schultz and his staff.
Penn Valley's Environmental Club works to get students energized about taking care of the Earth and help their communities while learning about some of the important environmental issues facing the world today. To view a slideshow of images from the tree planting, click on the box below!
