Penn Wynne Re-creates Vintage Photo Ahead of Alex's Lemonade Stand

Penn Wynne Re-creates Vintage Photo Ahead of Alex's Lemonade Stand

To prepare for “Alex’s Original Lemonade Stand,” which will be held at Penn Wynne Elementary School (250 Haverford Rd., Wynnewood) on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., students at the school re-created a 22-year-old photo on the school field honoring Alexandra “Alex” Scott.

Alex was a Penn Wynne student who started what has become a powerhouse charity supporting pediatric cancer research, children fighting cancer and their families.

The school also held a pep rally ahead of the Original Lemonade Stand on Friday afternoon, June 5, 2026. The event included a speech by Liz Scott, Alex's mother, cheers and a beautiful rendition of Phil Collins'  "You'll Be In My Heart" sung by music teacher Nicholas Trawick.

After the pep rally, the entire school gathered on the blacktop to practice their flash mob dance, which will also be performed at the lemonades stand on Saturday.

Alex hosted her first lemonade stand 26 years ago in her family’s yard. At the time, she was just four years old and battling neuroblastoma. She raised $2000 that year. When her parents, Liz and Jay Scott, asked what she wanted to buy, she said, “Oh, I don’t want to keep the money. I want to give it to doctors so they can come up with treatments.”

The popularity of Alex’s lemonade stand grew so much that in 2004, it was moved from the Scotts’ yard to Alex’s school, Penn Wynne Elementary. That year, Penn Wynne physical education teacher Anita Deasey orchestrated a photo of students on the school field spelling out “Alex.” Photographer Sharon Taffet climbed on the school roof to capture the shot, which hangs in the school to this day.

It was that photo that students re-created in honor of the 2026 Lemonade Stand, with support from the Lower Merion School District Operations Department, who sketched the letters on the field, and from the Lower Merion Township Police Department, who used their drone to capture the shot.

Taffet, the original photographer, said, “I am thrilled that the photo has been recreated 22 years later. Alex was a very special little girl, and I feel blessed to have known her. The seeds she planted with the first lemonade stand have flourished and I know she would have been so proud of the extraordinary advances ALSF has fostered in the realm of Neuroblastoma research.”

Sadly, Alex lost her battle with neuroblastoma at the age of eight. Before she died, she met her goal of raising $1 million with lemonade stands. The next year, her parents officially established ALSF to carry on her legacy. Since then, ALSF has raised more than $350 million for more than 1500 childhood cancer research and family support programs at more than 150 institutions.
