Penn Wynne Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month with Dancing & Displays

Penn Wynne Elementary School recently welcomed Villanova University’s Assistant Director of Student Performing Arts, Manny Chacón, for a fun and educational assembly celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month!

Held annually from September 15 through October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the rich histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans, whose influence continues to inspire and strengthen our schools and communities.

During the assembly, Chacón shared insights into the cultural significance and evolution of reggaetón, a vibrant music and dance genre that blends Latin rhythms with Caribbean and hip-hop influences. Students learned about reggaetón’s roots in Afro-Latin identity and its role in expressing creativity, resilience and community pride.

The highlight of the event came when Chacón invited students to get up and moving, leading them through a series of high-energy dance steps that had the entire cafetorium buzzing with excitement. Laughter, rhythm and movement filled the space as students experienced firsthand how music and dance connect people across cultures.

As a further celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Penn Wynne teacher Jeanmarie Mercier designed and curated a series of displays highlighting Hispanic culture and contributions. Mercier’s exhibits included an overview explaining the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month, a collection of Hispanic-themed children’s books and displays exploring La Comida (Food), Celebraciones (Celebrations), Los Bailes (Dances), and Frases en Español (Spanish Phrases), as well as a tribute to influential Hispanic Americans!

Penn Wynne’s celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a joyful reminder of the power of the arts to build understanding, celebrate diversity and bring communities together.
