Penguins Explore the Lives & Legacies of Famous Americans

Penn Wynne Elementary School second graders recently showcased their research, presentation and public speaking skills during the school’s annual Famous Americans assembly.

As part of the project, students selected influential Americans from both the present day and throughout history and spent several weeks researching their lives, accomplishments and lasting impact on the world. Through their work, the Penguins explored a wide range of figures, including activists, inventors, athletes, political leaders, artists, scientists and other notable individuals who helped shape American history and culture.

After gathering information and organizing their research, students created presentations highlighting key moments and accomplishments from their chosen figure’s life, along with biographical details, famous quotations and other interesting facts. The second graders then shared their learning with classmates, teachers, family members and friends during the assembly.

The entire second-grade class also gathered on stage to share reflections about the project and what they learned before performing an ensemble of American classics and hit songs, including You’re a Grand Old Flag and Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World.

Projects like the Famous Americans assembly provide students with opportunities to strengthen important academic and communication skills in meaningful, engaging ways. By researching historical figures, synthesizing information and presenting their findings to an audience, students build confidence while developing skills in reading, writing, research and public speaking.
