Forty-two members of the Lower Merion High School Class of 1949 enjoyed their 70th Reunion on Friday, October 11, 2019, at Aronimink Golf Club. Some traveled back to the Main Line from as far away as Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina.
Alumnus Don DeWees and his wife, Martha (LMHS '50), treated the classmates and their guests to a buffet luncheon at the Club. The guest speaker was Amy Buckman (LMHS '82), who is the Director of School and Community Relations for the Lower Merion School District.
Buckman highlighted some of the similarities and differences between the LMHS of 1949 and today. For example, the school newspaper is still "The Merionite" and the yearbook is still "The Enchiridion." But the current building is twice-removed from the building where the Class of '49 went to school. And while typing and stenography were on the course list back then, today's second-graders learn keyboarding and computer coding.
After Buckman's speech, the class members passed the microphone around the room to share some of their favorite high school memories and catch each other up on their lives. The reunion was organized by classmates Bobbie Carre Fischer, Bob Dempsey and Hal Lampe.
