Lower Merion High School 11th grader Angelina Lu was recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum 2025 High School Design Challenge.
Lu's design answered the prompt, "What would you design to help everyone feel at home in your community?"
Her submission features a walkable community with modular structures that can be transformed over time to meet evolving needs. It also includes mixed-use buildings that preserve the history of the neighborhood and reuse materials from abandoned structures, as well as a blue-light public safety call system and plenty of accessible outdoor space.
In her submission, Lu stated, "Home is the feeling of togetherness. With everything conveniently located a walk away, people are more closely bonded within the community."
The winners were selected from among 633 entries from high schools across the country.
