Lower Merion High School recently hosted a Black Lit Open Mic in the library as part of the National African American Read-In (AARI) – a groundbreaking effort founded in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to celebrate African-American literature and authors as well as to promote literacy as a significant aspect of Black History Month!
Members of the LMHS community gathered in the library to listen as students stood at the podium and shared readings of words penned by African-American authors that ran the literary gamut from poetry to selections from non-fiction titles like Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me. Students from the Lower Merion's Black Excellence class also shared presentations on influential African-American artists and their impact on society.
