Members of Harriton High School's National Honor Society led a school-wide food drive that will enable more than 100 Montgomery County families enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving.
The students, their classmates, Harriton staff and families collected enough non-perishable food items, kitchen and cooking supplies, and cash donations to provide full dinners to more than 100 families served by the Montgomery County Office of Children and Youth (OCY).
The NHS students spent an afternoon sorting all of the food donations into numbered boxes, each assigned to specific family, to ensure that everyone in the household would could enjoy the holiday. In addition to the food, they used the donated cash to purchase more than 100 $35 gift cards, which the families can use for perishable items and other necessities.
LMSD staff members from the Operations Department helped stack the boxes onto eight pallets, wrap them in plastic for safe transport, and load them onto a delivery truck.
On Friday morning, November 22, 2204, 116 students boarded school buses to follow the truck to the OCY office building in Norristown. They were greeted by cheering social workers and staff. The social workers identified the recipient families and will personally deliver the holiday boxes before Thanksgiving.
OCY Deputy Administrator Nadine Miller said that she looks forward to the Harriton students' arrival every year and thanked them on behalf of the families who might not have been able to have a Thanksgiving dinner without their support.
This is the 11th year that the Harriton National Honor Society, which is sponsored by teacher Mrs. Donna Rossi, has held this event.
