There's no arguing about it. Harriton High School has some top-notch debaters.
On March 4, 2023, Harriton's Public Forum Debate Team of juniors Rachel Harmon and Liron Brunner qualified at the PCFL District Tournament to move on to the NCFL national competition in Louisville, Kentucky. That event will take place over Memorial Day Weekend.
Then, on March 17-18, 2023, seniors Rose Weathers and Veikko Toikka, won the the State Title in Parliamentary Debate at the Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) State Competition.
Weathers and Toikka were undefeated in the four preliminary rounds of debate before advancing to win the quarterfinals, semifinals and final round. More than 600 students from 78 high schools across Pennsylvania participated in the event.
A few of the topics on which Weathers and Toikka debated were:
- Resolved: This House would make the Internet a public good.
- Resolved: This House should be responsible for the removal of space junk.
- Resolved: This House would share top secret military technology with Ukraine.
Also at the state competition, 11th grader Lang Qin was named a semifinalist in impromptu speaking and received a medal.
