Welsh Valley Takes the "No Place for Hate" Pledge

Welsh Valley Middle School students recently took a break from physical education class to take the 'No Place for Hate' pledge as part of the Dragons' annual participation in the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)’s 'No Place for Hate' program.

'No Place for Hate' is a self-directed initiative that helps schools combat bias and bullying, fostering a more equitable and inclusive climate.

By placing a sticker with their initials on the 'No Place for Hate' poster, students affirmed their commitment to Welsh Valley’s ongoing inclusivity efforts. The pledge states: 'As members of the Welsh Valley community, we strive to create an environment of respect, responsibility and acceptance in which we are safe, can learn and feel appreciated!'

To receive the 'No Place for Hate' designation for the current school year, the Dragons—perennial recipients of this distinction—must complete the following comprehensive requirements as outlined by the ADL:

  • Sign Up: Schools register for the No Place for Hate initiative through their regional ADL office.
  • Formation of a Coalition: Schools form a No Place for Hate committee, typically including students, teachers, and parents, which oversees activities and initiatives.
  • Pledge: The school community signs the No Place for Hate pledge, committing to promote respect and challenge bias and bullying.
  • Needs Assessment and Action Plan: Schools conduct a needs assessment to identify specific issues related to bias, bullying, and diversity, then develop an action plan.
  • Three or More Activities: Schools implement at least three school-wide activities that promote respect for differences and challenge bias or bullying, such as workshops, assemblies, curriculum lessons, or community events.
  • Submission of Documentation: Schools document their activities and submit them to the ADL for review, including descriptions, attendance records, and reflections on outcomes and impacts.
  • Evaluation and Feedback: The ADL evaluates the submitted documentation, provides feedback, and determines if the school has met the criteria for the No Place for Hate designation.

It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it to help ensure that all students feel the sense of belonging that has become synonymous with Welsh Valley!
