Topics of Community Interest to be Discussed at Monday's School Board Meeting

Monday’s School Board Meeting

At the Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, regular business meeting of the Lower Merion Board of School Directors, members of the Administration will present updates on two topics of great community interest:

·      Healthy Start Times

·      Universal Full-Day Kindergarten

The Board will also vote on the appointment of Megan Shafer to the position of Acting Superintendent of the Lower Merion School District. Ms. Shafer has been an administrator in the District since 2011, and currently serves as Assistant to the Superintendent for District Administration.

School Board President Lucy Klain said, “Ms. Shafer not only has the respect of her colleagues and a deep institutional knowledge of our District, she is uniquely positioned to continue the momentum of important initiatives, such as Healthy Start Times, universal full-day kindergarten and our work in the areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. She is already well-versed in all of these areas, which will enable her to advance the efforts that Dr. Mumin began.”

Ms. Shafer is a graduate of Denison University and the Temple University School of Law. She began her career in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, before moving on to work in labor and employment law and in education law, first at Morgan, Lewis, Bockius LLP and then at Wisler Pearlstine LLP. She served as LMSD’s Director of Human Resources and Senior Director of Policy, Personnel and School Programs prior to assuming her current position.

The Board will be enlisting the assistance of a search firm with expertise in educational leadership to conduct a search for a new Superintendent. The goal is to present a final candidate to the Board for approval in late spring, and to have a new superintendent in place prior to the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

The full meeting agenda will be available on BoardDocs.

The meeting will be held at 8:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Administration Building at 301 E. Montgomery Avenue in Ardmore and will be available via Zoom and livestream.
