Harriton High School recently held its annual Rites of Passage Ceremony, honoring the graduating seniors of the POWER Scholars Program with an evening filled with celebration, reflection and cultural tradition!
Friends, family, classmates, teachers and alumni convened in the cafeteria to celebrate this year’s exceptional group of seniors as they enjoyed a program filled with heartfelt speeches, special recognitions, a shared meal and the powerful Kente Ceremony.
Rooted in African heritage, Rites of Passage mark pivotal life transitions, symbolizing the growth of individuals or communities and a meaningful step toward new responsibilities and social roles. These rituals acknowledge the journey into adulthood as one of both privilege and accountability.
Following a formal entrance by the honorees—who made their procession to the rhythmic accompaniment of African drums—Acting Principal Stu Warshawer welcomed the audience and offered commendations for this year’s POWER Scholars. He then introduced the beloved Mr. Nate Bantoe, the program’s coordinator, who served as emcee for the evening.
The program included a moving poem shared by Harriton sophomore Amara Lott, followed by reflections from alumna Euphoria Davis, who now attends Spelman College. She spoke about the lasting impact Harriton and the POWER Scholars program had on her personal and academic journey. Seniors Francesca Momplaisir, Musyn Denns and Autumn Gordon also shared meaningful stories about their transformative experiences in the program.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of traditional Kente cloth stoles to each graduating POWER Scholar. Originating from the Ashanti and Ewe peoples of Ghana, Kente cloth has a legacy spanning nearly 400 years. Historically dyed with natural pigments from local trees, the cloth’s signature red, yellow and green colors symbolize the blood of ancestors, the richness of gold and the vitality of forests. Once reserved for royalty and high-ranking leaders, Kente has become a modern symbol of honor, achievement and cultural pride.
Congratulations to the POWER Scholars Class of 2025—may your futures be as vibrant and purposeful as the traditions you now carry forward. Click through the slideshow below to see moments from the celebration!
