Lower Merion-Harriton Alumni Association Celebrates Distinguished Alumni

The Lower Merion-Harriton Alumni Association recently celebrated its newest class of Distinguished Alumni at a luncheon held Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Estia Taverna in Radnor.

The Distinguished Alumni recognition honors graduates of Lower Merion or Harriton high schools who have been out of school for at least 15 years and have earned awards, honors or professional recognition from peers, civic organizations, community groups or professional associations. Honorees are selected for achievements that reflect exceptional commitment, success and contributions to their professions, communities or fields of service. The award may also be granted posthumously.

This year’s honorees represented a wide range of fields, including medicine, education, music, athletics, architecture, law, technology, business, philanthropy, food sustainability, media and the arts.

Among those recognized were physicians and medical leaders Steven W. Kairys, M.D. ’61, Robert Sergott, M.D. ’67 and Ronald M. Fairman, M.D. ’69, whose careers have included major contributions in pediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology and vascular surgery. The class also included James Undercofler ’63, a longtime leader in music education and arts administration who has served in roles with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Eastman School of Music and Purchase College/SUNY.

Harriton alumni honored included Peter Reinhart ’68, an award-winning baker, educator and author; Anita Corl Huntsman ’69, an Olympic bronze medalist and member of the U.S. Field Hockey Hall of Fame; and Andrew Hertzfeld ’71, a pioneering software engineer and key member of the original Apple Macintosh development team.

Other honorees included Peter Greenspun ’71, an accomplished trial attorney; Gail Ramsay ’76, a national squash champion and Hall of Fame inductee; Kenneth Lewis ’78, an architect whose work has contributed to major civic and commercial landmarks, including One World Trade Center; Jean Sachs ’80, CEO of Living Beyond Breast Cancer; Arlin Wasserman ’84, a leader in food sustainability; Robert “Bobbito” Garcia ’88, a DJ, author, filmmaker and hip-hop radio figure; and Kylie McDevitt Kelce ’10, a philanthropist, podcaster and head varsity field hockey coach at Lower Merion High School.

Together, the honorees reflect the breadth of talent, leadership and service that has emerged from Lower Merion and Harriton high schools across generations. Their accomplishments serve as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact LMSD graduates continue to make locally, nationally and around the world.

Steven W. Kairys, M.D. — LM '61
Steven W. Kairys, M.D.

LMHS, Class of 1961

Steven W. Kairys, M.D., is a renowned and respected pediatrician whose career has included extensive clinical, academic and leadership work in children’s health. Affiliated with multiple hospitals in New Jersey, Dr. Kairys has held numerous academic appointments, including department chair, acting chair and senior associate dean roles in pediatrics. He has served on committees addressing suspected abuse and neglect, family and child trauma, and children at risk, and has received numerous honors, including multiple Pediatrician of the Year recognitions in New Jersey. He has also published more than three dozen times throughout his distinguished career.

James Undercofler — LM '63
James Undercofler

LMHS, Class of 1963

James Undercofler has built a distinguished career in music, arts administration and arts education. He has served as president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra, dean and professor of music education at the Eastman School of Music, interim director of the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College/SUNY and artistic director of the National Orchestral Institute and Festival at the University of Maryland. His work has also included founding and leadership roles with arts education centers in Minnesota and New Haven, Connecticut, as well as consulting in organizational design and executive coaching for arts professionals.

Peter McCausland — LM '67
Peter McCausland

LMHS, Class of 1967

Peter McCausland is an entrepreneur, attorney and business leader best known as the founder of Airgas, the Radnor-based company that became one of the nation’s leading suppliers of industrial, medical and specialty gases and related products. After beginning his career as in-house counsel for the U.S. subsidiary of a German industrial gas producer, he developed expertise in acquisitions and later formed Airgas, taking the company public in 1986. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chemical Marketing and Economics Society in 2012 and has served on numerous nonprofit boards.

Robert Sergott, M.D. — LM '67
Robert Sergott, M.D.

LMHS, Class of 1967

Robert Sergott, M.D., is a nationally and internationally recognized neuro-ophthalmologist. He earned both his bachelor’s and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University and completed training through Wills Eye Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Sergott has served as co-director of Neuro-Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital and is the founding director of the William H. Annesley Eye Brain Center at the Farber Neuroscience Institute at Jefferson. His career includes extensive research, publications, lectures, fellow training and more than 30 professional awards and honors.

Peter Reinhart — HHS '68
Peter Reinhart

HHS, Class of 1968

Peter Reinhart is an award-winning baker, educator and author known for his influential work in bread and pizza. His books include Bread Revolution, American Pie: My Search for the Perfect Pizza and The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, which won the James Beard Foundation’s Book of the Year award in 2002. Reinhart founded Brother Juniper’s Bakery in Santa Rosa and has taught at the California Culinary Academy and Johnson & Wales University. He has also consulted for major food companies and shared his innovative techniques through a TED Talk and other culinary forums.

Ronald M. Fairman, M.D. — LM '69
Ronald M. Fairman, M.D.

LMHS, Class of 1969

Ronald M. Fairman, M.D., has had an accomplished nearly 40-year career in surgery, with a focus on vascular and endovascular surgery. A leading investigator in the development of vascular stents used to treat aortic aneurysms, Dr. Fairman has held numerous roles at the University of Pennsylvania, including chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Surgery. He has received many honors, including Philadelphia Magazine “Top Docs” recognition, and has been active in numerous professional and scientific societies.

Anita Corl Huntsman — HHS '69
Anita Corl Huntsman

HHS, Class of 1969

Anita Corl Huntsman is an accomplished field hockey athlete and Olympic medalist. She was a member of the United States Women’s National Field Hockey Team that won a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. She also qualified for the 1980 Olympic team, though the team did not compete because of the U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games, and she was among the athletes who received a Congressional Gold Medal in 1980. Huntsman later served as a torch bearer for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and has been inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the United States Field Hockey Hall of Fame.

Peter Greenspun — LM '71
Peter Greenspun

LMHS, Class of 1971

Peter Greenspun is a highly respected trial attorney with more than 35 years of experience handling complex criminal matters and wrongful death actions in Virginia and the Washington, D.C., region. Known for his work on high-profile cases, he has served as a featured commentator for local and national broadcasts and has held leadership roles in major legal organizations, including the Fairfax Bar Association and Fairfax Bar Foundation. Greenspun has been repeatedly recognized among Washington Magazine’s “Top 50 Lawyers” and honored by Best Lawyers in America.

Andrew Hertzfeld — HHS '71
Andrew Hertzfeld

HHS, Class of 1971

Andrew Hertzfeld is a pioneering software engineer best known as a key member of the original Apple Macintosh development team. Recruited by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to join the Macintosh project in 1981, Hertzfeld helped make personal computing easier and more enjoyable to use. After leaving Apple, he continued to contribute to open-source software and later joined Google as a key designer. He also created folklore.org, a website devoted to stories about the development of the original Macintosh.

Gail Ramsay — LM '76
Gail Ramsay

LMHS, Class of 1976

Gail Ramsay is a trailblazing squash player and coach whose accomplishments helped shape the history of women’s squash. She was the first player, male or female, to win four consecutive singles championships and went on to earn 14 national titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Ramsay also represented the United States as a two-time national team member. After coaching at Williams College, she joined Princeton University in 1994 and was later inducted into the United States Squash Hall of Fame.

Kenneth Lewis — LM '78
Kenneth Lewis

LMHS, Class of 1978

Kenneth Lewis is an accomplished architect whose work has contributed to major commercial and civic landmarks in New York City and beyond. His projects include One World Trade Center, Deutsche Bank Center, Manhattan West, the James A. Farley Post Office, the Waldorf Astoria, 7 World Trade Center and 35 Hudson Yards. Lewis has held leadership roles in professional organizations, served as adjunct faculty and visiting critic at Parsons School of Design, and participated in design juries at institutions including the Rhode Island School of Design and Washington University in St. Louis.

Jean Sachs — LM '80
Jean Sachs

LMHS, Class of 1980

Jean Sachs has dedicated her career to improving the lives of women affected by breast cancer. She is the first executive director and current CEO of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a Haverford-based nonprofit that provides information and support to people diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as their families, friends and caregivers. Under her leadership, the organization has expanded its reach, reputation and annual budget significantly. Sachs has also helped build major fundraising initiatives and partnerships, including the organization’s Butterfly Ball.

Arlin Wasserman — LM '84
Arlin Wasserman

LMHS, Class of 1984

Arlin Wasserman is a leader in food sustainability and the founder of Changing Tastes, a consultancy that helps clients identify opportunity and value in sustainable food systems and the evolving role of culinary professionals. Over the past two decades, he has advised restaurants and environmental organizations, helped advance plant-forward cuisine in the restaurant industry and served as vice president of sustainability at Sodexo. He has also received fellowships through the Aspen Institute and the Kellogg Foundation.

Robert “Bobbito” Garcia — LM '88
Robert Bobbito Garcia

LMHS, Class of 1988

Robert “Bobbito” Garcia is a DJ, radio host, author, filmmaker and hip-hop cultural figure. Also known as DJ Cucumber Slice and Kool Bob Love, Garcia was a former co-host of The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show, which was named by The Source as the “Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time” and was inducted into the NAB Radio Hall of Fame in 2023. He has been involved in music, basketball, streetball media and film, including directing episodes of ESPN’s Sneaker Center, and has been recognized with Wesleyan University’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Kylie McDevitt Kelce — LMHS '10
Kylie McDevitt Kelce

LMHS, Class of 2010

Kylie McDevitt Kelce is a philanthropist, event coordinator, podcaster and field hockey coach. A former field hockey standout at Lower Merion and Cabrini University, she was a four-year starter in college, helped win Colonial States Athletic Conference titles and earned honors including CSAC Rookie of the Year, All-CSAC First Team and ECAC All-Star recognition. She now serves as head varsity field hockey coach at Lower Merion High School, supports the Eagles Autism Foundation, helps manage the nonprofit Be Philly and hosts the podcast Not Gonna Lie.

Charles Eugene Clanghorn — LM '29
Charles Eugene Clanghorn

LMHS, Class of 1929

Charles Eugene Clanghorn was an author of nonfiction who published six books on biographies of musicians and singers, along with four books on the American Revolution. He was among the first ten honorees recognized by Pierce Junior College, his alma mater, with the Pride of Pierce Award.

Clanghorn also received the Stephen Taylor Award from the National Society Sons of the American Revolution three times for different books.

Colonel Paul German Jr. — LM '45
Colonel Paul German Jr.

LMHS, Class of 1945

Colonel Paul German Jr. was designated a Naval Aviator on June 15, 1954, and logged 4,655 flight hours during his career as an aviator. His service included roles as a fighter pilot, carrier pilot, jet transition instructor, squadron commander in combat in the Republic of Vietnam and chief of staff.

A member of the Golden Eagles, the Early and Pioneer Naval Aviators Association, German flew 284 air-to-ground bombing missions in A-6 and A-4 aircraft in North and South Vietnam and Laos. For his service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit with a combat “V” and the Air Medal with Numeral 20. Following his combat service, he spent three years in Hawaii, first with the Fleet Marine Force Pacific staff and then as executive officer of the resident USMC F-4 fighter group, flying F4-B/J and TA-4J aircraft.

Henry Charles Smith — LM '48
Henry Charles Smith

LMHS, Class of 1948

Henry Charles Smith earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1955. He became principal trombonist with The Philadelphia Orchestra, performing more than 2,000 concerts with Eugene Ormandy, as well as many of the world’s greatest conductors.

Smith founded the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble, with which he earned three Grammy nominations and one Grammy Award for Best Classical Record of the Year. He later held conducting appointments with the Rochester Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra, where he became resident conductor. He also led orchestras at the University of Texas and the University of Arizona, served as a guest conductor with major and regional orchestras, including Tanglewood and Interlochen, and was music director of the South Dakota Symphony. Smith also taught at Temple University and the Curtis Institute of Music.

Paul B. Green — LM '48
Paul B. Green

LMHS, Class of 1948

Paul B. Green was a professor of biological sciences at Stanford University and a plant physiology expert. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Harvard and the Swiss Federal Technical Institute.

Green received the Darbaker Prize of the Botanical Society of America for his work in plant morphogenesis, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was also one of eight foreign members of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts in Belgium.

Morton Grosser, Ph.D. — LM '49
Morton Grosser, Ph.D.

LMHS, Class of 1949

Dr. Morton Grosser served as president of a science and technology consultancy. He worked with premier venture capitalists in Silicon Valley for 25 years and helped found and direct many high-technology companies.

Grosser earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in the history of science from Stanford University. He served as a director of eight high-tech companies and as a strategy adviser to Fortune 100 corporations ranging from Apple to Xerox. He wrote eight books, several articles for national publications and was listed in numerous directories of achievement, including The Blue Book, Contemporary Authors, Jane’s Who’s Who in Aerospace, Men of Achievement, Who’s Who in California, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who of American Inventors.

Michael Rosenfeld — LM '52

LMHS, Class of 1952

Michael Rosenfeld was a talent agent, movie producer, co-founder of Creative Artists Agency and Pennsylvania state senator. In his later years, he left the agency and became an executive producer of films, including Flowers in the Attic, and worked on television productions including the Emmy-nominated The Case of the Hillside Stranglers.

Rosenfeld began his career in the mailroom of the William Morris talent agency, worked his way up and helped Rita Moreno earn her Oscar-winning role in West Side Story. He passed away in 2010.

Richard Sandler — LM '56
Richard Sandler

LMHS, Class of 1956

Richard Sandler was a sports editor of Newsday. During his tenure, the publication was selected in 1987 and 1988 as one of the top ten daily, Sunday and special sections.

Sandler was posthumously recognized with the Associated Press Sports Editors’ Red Smith Award in 1995. In 1989, he was named a loyal son of Rutgers University, where he attended undergraduate school. He received his master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism.

Gilbert Harman — LM '56
Gilbert Harman

LMHS, Class of 1956

Gilbert Harman was a philosopher and Princeton University professor who published widely in the philosophy of language, cognitive science, philosophy of mind, ethics, moral psychology, epistemology and metaphysics. He held the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professorship in Philosophy and was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Harman received the Jean Nicod Prize in Paris and Princeton University’s Behrman Award for distinguished achievement in the humanities. He attended Swarthmore College and earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Kobe Bryant — LM '96
Kobe Bryant

LMHS, Class of 1996

Kobe Bryant was known in the Lower Merion community and around the world as a basketball legend, businessman and philanthropist. He played 20 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association and represented the United States on two Olympic teams, both of which won gold medals.

Bryant was an All-Star and record-setting scorer whose impact extended beyond the court. He and his wife received the Bill Sharman Humanitarian Award, and through the Kobe and Vanessa Foundation, he supported numerous organizations helping children in Los Angeles and around the world. His charitable work included support for programs such as Stand Up to Cancer and After-School All-Stars, which provides comprehensive after-school programs in cities across the country.
