LMSD NSBE Jr. Team Wins Big in Baltimore, Advances to World Championship

Students representing Lower Merion School District’s National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Jr. chapter turned in a remarkable performance at the 2026 NSBE Annual Convention in Baltimore, capturing the VEX V5 Robotics Tournament Championship, the VEX V5 Robotics Skills Award and the VEX V5 Excellence Award to earn a spot in the World Championships later this month.

Representing LMSD at the convention were Harriton High School junior Noah Murphy and sophomore Levi Perry, along with Lower Merion High School senior Seth Akuaku and juniors Xavier Bankole and Sebastian Torres, under the leadership of educators Ms. Enongé Mallard and Mr. Nate Bantoe.

Held March 18–22, 2026, the NSBE Annual Convention is the National Society of Black Engineers’ flagship national gathering, bringing together students, professionals, employers and partners from across the country for programming centered on engineering, technology, leadership and career development. The event draws more than 15,000 attendees and features competitions, workshops, speaker sessions, networking opportunities, community engagement and STEM programming for students, including NSBE Jr. participants.

LMSD’s team excelled across every phase of the VEX competition. In addition to winning the tournament championship, the students earned the Skills Award for their robot’s performance in individual driving and programming runs. They also received the Excellence Award, the top overall honor in VEX Robotics, which recognizes a team that stands out across the board in competition, design, teamwork and professionalism.

With their success in Baltimore, the team now advances to the VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, where they will compete against top teams from around the world. It is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of the students’ talent, dedication and hard work, as well as the guidance and support of their advisers!
