The Lower Merion Liberty girls ice hockey team made history by capturing the 2026 Flyers Cup Championship, the first in program history, with a 3-1 victory over Avon Grove at PNY Sports Arena!
The title marks a milestone moment for the program and caps off a remarkable season for the Liberty Girls, comprised of players from Harriton and Lower Merion high schools, who showcased resilience, skill and determination throughout their postseason run.
After Avon Grove scored the game’s opening goal, Lower Merion answered just 30 seconds later with the equalizer from Ellie Smith. Stella Strode and Thea Moore added goals to lift Liberty to the championship victory in a hard-fought title game.
Lower Merion’s success was fueled by a complete team effort throughout the tournament. Goalie Ruby Leno delivered a standout postseason performance and was named the Bobby Clarke Most Valuable Player. The Liberty Girls opened Flyers Cup play with a dominant 10-0 win over Radnor before edging Downingtown West, 3-2, in the semifinals to advance to the final.
One of the premier championships in Eastern Pennsylvania high school hockey, the Flyers Cup represents a major achievement for the program and the Lower Merion community. Family members, friends and supporters rallied behind the team all season long, helping fuel an unforgettable run to the title.
