More than 60 years after its inception, the Junior Olympics remains a highlight of the elementary school calendar in Lower Merion School District. The annual event brings together fourth-grade students from all six LMSD elementary schools—Belmont Hills, Cynwyd, Gladwyne, Merion, Penn Valley and Penn Wynne—for a districtwide celebration of physical education and school spirit.
Leading up to the big day, students trained during gym class in a variety of track and field events, including the 60-Yard Dash, Long Jump, High Jump, 4x100 Relay, Distance Run, Softball Throw and the ever-popular Tug-of-War.
After several cancellations due to inclement weather in recent weeks, many students worried they might miss out on this beloved elementary school rite of passage. Fortunately, thanks to the dogged persistence of the District’s dedicated principals and teachers—along with some last-minute cooperation from Mother Nature—fourth graders were able to enjoy a full slate of spirited competition at Lower Merion High School’s Arnold Field.
Though ribbons and school pride are up for grabs, the emphasis remains on participation, sportsmanship and community. Educators and staff across the District come together each year to ensure the Junior Olympics is a joyful and memorable experience for all.
