Information about Emails regarding Class Action Settlement and Naviance

Over Easter weekend, some LMSD families received an email with the subject line “Legal Notice of Class Action Settlement” from Kroll Settlement Administration LLC. While LMSD was not notified that this communication would be sent, it does appear to be legitimate.

Naviance, a cloud-based platform owned by PowerSchool, is currently used by LMSD and school districts, colleges and universities nationwide, for post-secondary planning. In March, LMSD proposed moving from Naviance to “SCOIR,” a different post-secondary planning platform.

The emails are legal notices that recipients may be part of a class of students impacted by a lawsuit that was filed against Naviance in August 2023. According to the complaint, PowerSchool and the Chicago Public Schools violated students’ privacy by using online tools to harvest a wide array of data.

While PowerSchool denies any wrongdoing and maintains they “strictly and proactively” follow student data privacy requirements at the federal and state levels, they have stated that they entered the settlement agreement “to avoid the uncertainty, distraction, and expense” of ongoing litigation.

The settlement agreement isn’t expected to be finalized until late August 2026. Under the proposed terms, Naviance has agreed to pay impacted families a total of $17.25 million and change its data-handling practices. The settlement funds could be divided among more than 10 million families.

According to the Class Action notification, any student who logged into Naviance between August 18, 2021, and January 23, 2026, is eligible to join the Class; however, this does not mean necessarily mean their data was directly involved in the alleged activity.

LMSD families may choose whether they want to join the Class by following the directions in the email. The deadline to join the Class is July 27, 2026. For additional information, visit the settlement website.
