On Friday, June 5, 2026, Superintendent Dr. Ranelli shared the letter below with the Cynwyd Elementary community.
Dear Cynwyd Elementary School Community,
I am writing to let you know that at the June 15, 2026, meeting of the Lower Merion Board of School Directors, I will be recommending the appointment of Ty Ross as the new principal of Black Rock Middle School. I’m excited for Mr. Ross to be taking on this new leadership challenge.
At the same time, I am pleased to share that Cynwyd’s assistant principal, Dr. Pete Papageorge, has agreed to serve as interim principal at Cynwyd to ensure continuity for the Cynwyd community, pending Board approval. I know many of you will miss seeing Mr. Ross, but I hope that Dr. Papageorge’s continuing presence will ease your concerns.
As you know, Dr. Papageorge has been Cynwyd’s assistant principal since the start of the 2023-2024 school year and has proven he is willing to do just about anything to support the Owls, up to wearing a tutu and getting pied in the face.
On a more serious note, he is respected districtwide as a PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) coach. He has been a leader of Cynwyd’s cultural proficiency team and oversees the school’s special education services. Outside of LMSD, he is also an adjunct professor at Rosemont College, where he teaches School Law and Ethics.
Prior to coming to Cynwyd, Dr. Papageorge was an assistant principal and acting principal at the Walter M. Senkow School in Upper Darby, a teaching and learning specialist at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit and a fourth-grade teacher.
He received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Penn State, master’s degrees in education and educational leadership from Rosemont College and his doctorate in education from Immaculata University.
I look forward to continuing to work with Dr. Papageorge as he leads Cynwyd in the coming months.
