THINKING CRITICALLY, CLICKING CAREFULLY: LMSD MARKS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP WEEK

Lower Merion School District recently wrapped up its annual Digital Citizenship Week programming, as students across all grade levels engaged in lessons and discussions designed to help them become safe, respectful and responsible participants in today’s digital world.

Each year during the third full week of October, LMSD joins Common Sense Media’s nationwide campaign promoting a healthy, balanced and positive approach to media and technology use among young people — empowering them to make thoughtful choices in an increasingly connected world.

  • In grades K–4, students began by developing critical thinking skills — learning how to question what they see online and make informed choices about digital content. The focus then shifted to curiosity, as children explored how the internet can be a safe and exciting space for learning and discovery. By midweek, creativity took center stage, with students using digital tools to express themselves, collaborate with others and share their ideas responsibly.
  • In grades 5–8, middle school students examined how to build balance, awareness and kindness online. They started the week reflecting on healthy screen-time habits and how to maintain balance between digital and offline life. The following day, lessons turned to artificial intelligence —exploring how AI shapes what we see online and discussing how to use it thoughtfully and ethically. Later in the week, students reflected on digital inclusivity, recognizing how kindness and empathy can help create safer, more positive online spaces.\
  • In grades 9–12, high school students took a deeper dive into understanding AI and protecting their digital footprints. They began by exploring how artificial intelligence interacts with personal data and online identity, followed by a lesson on LMSD’s Student AI Use Guidelines and how tools like ChatGPT can enhance learning when used responsibly. The week concluded with a conversation about cell phone use and privacy — a reminder that what’s shared online can last longer than we think, and that thoughtful choices help protect both reputation and relationships in the digital world.

To close out the week, LMSD Elementary Technology Specialist Jen Goldberg visited Gladwyne Elementary School, where she worked with third graders in Andrea Malkin’s class on a lesson titled “Outsmarting Attention Thieves.” The lesson encouraged students to reflect on how technology can compete for their attention and how to manage those distractions effectively. They learned that our brains have limits to what they can focus on at once and practiced strategies to help protect their attention — such as pausing to identify distractions, setting tech boundaries and using simple mindfulness techniques to stay on task.
