Cynwyd Elementary School Instructional Aide Sean McLaughlin recently spoke with students about one of his important roles outside the classroom — serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Narberth Fire Department.
McLaughlin, who has been volunteering as a firefighter for more than five years, is also the father of two students at Merion Elementary School. During his presentation, he spoke to students about what it’s like to be a firefighter and demonstrated how to put on the special protective gear firefighters use to stay safe from fire and smoke.
The students were excited to get an up-close look at the tools and equipment firefighters rely on to do their job. In addition to the hands-on experience, McLaughlin shared essential fire safety and prevention tips, including staying low in smoke, practicing “Stop, Drop, and Roll,” and ensuring home smoke detectors have working batteries.
As part of his presentation, McLaughlin introduced students to one of the Narberth Fire Department’s newest and most impressive tools — a Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC). These devices are vital in firefighting, using infrared technology to detect heat signatures and improve visibility in smoke-filled or dark environments. TICs play a crucial role in saving lives and enhancing firefighter safety.
McLaughlin’s visit provided students with valuable knowledge while giving them a deeper appreciation for the brave individuals who dedicate their time to keeping the community safe.
