BLACK ROCK KEHILLAH STUDENTS ENGAGE IN SERVICE & CELEBRATION

This May, student members of the Kehillah Jewish Affinity Group at Black Rock Middle School took part in a pair of enriching and impactful events as part of their Jewish American Heritage Month programming, blending community service, cultural pride and hands-on learning!

Community Service in Action: Jewish Relief Agency Field Trip

On Wednesday, May 15, Kehillah students traveled to the Jewish Relief Agency (JRA), where they helped pack and deliver food boxes to families in need. The experience gave students a meaningful opportunity to engage in direct service while learning about the importance of supporting vulnerable communities. Their energy, compassion and teamwork were on full display as they worked together to make a tangible difference—embodying JRA’s mission to fight hunger in the region.

Celebrating Heritage at the Weitzman Museum

Just a few days later, on Sunday, May 18, the Royals played a leading role in the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History’s Dual Heritage Celebration, an event honoring both Jewish and Asian American heritage.

As part of the festivities, students hosted a lively and well-attended “Challah Braiding Station,” guiding participants of all ages through the process of braiding challah using pre-portioned dough and toppings. Attendees left with their own creations to bake at home, and the station quickly became one of the highlights of the day.

Leading up to the event, students practiced their braiding techniques—including the impressive six-strand method—and designed a colorful sign for their table. With the help of a few dedicated parent volunteers, the station ran smoothly from start to finish. The group also pitched in earlier in the month to bag and prep the dough in advance.

Both events showcased the Kehillah students’ spirit, leadership and commitment to community—and served as powerful reminders of the joy that comes from giving, learning and sharing culture together!
